Kids love phones and computers. Little kids who can’t read or write can use a smartphone and a computer to play games or watch cartoons. It is amazing.
We have a computer at home. I use it for work. My wife uses it for social media. Our little girl, who is 4, uses it to watch cartoons and play games.
Of course, she can not use it any time she wants. She must ask us first.
Also the computer has a password. And only my wife and I know it. Or so we thought.
One day we found our daughter using the computer without permission. Somehow she managed to log in. She was playing her favorite game.
How is it possible? She doesn’t know the password.
And even if she did… She can’t read or write. She can recognize some letters. But there is no way she can type in the whole password.
I had to find out how she did it.
I asked her, but she refused to tell me. I begged her. She wouldn’t tell me. I tried to bribe her with ice cream. She still refused to tell me.
I was – upset. I was puzzled.
How? How is it possible?
I am very good with computers, but still I couldn’t figure out how she did it.
Finally, she gave up. She agreed to show me how she logged into the computer.
She pressed the power button and the computer shut down. Then she pressed the button again and it turned on. The computer started up and the operating system loaded. To my surprise, it didn’t ask for a password.
Turns out, all this time my wife and I never shut down the computer. We only put it to sleep.
It was set to ask for a password after it woke up. But the setting to ask for a password at start-up was disabled.
That day my 4 year old taught me something new about computers. A lesson that I’ll never forget.
